Model, texture and render this athletic shoe using modo 203 with Luxology's Andy Brown

C9Modern athletic shoes are an impressive blend of design and engineering. Learning how to model one in modo lets you master skills that will serve you well in the creation of various other hard and softbody objects - backpacks, luggage and the like.

This series of video tutorials takes you step by step (no pun intended) through the creation of an athletic shoe. Not only will you be shown how to model the shoe, piece by piece, you will also learn how to create UV maps and prepare the shoe for a presentation rendering. Right down to the stitching. As always, you can opt to purchase the entire video album - or only the individual videos of interest to you. Models in modo's .LXO format are supplied with many of the videos so that you have access to the project at each stage.

This set of video tutorials makes use of modo 203's new UV editing tools and benefits from the increased rendering speed in modo 203 as well. Basic knowledge of modo is assumed in this tutorial and it is roughly targetted at the "intermediate" user (though virtually everyone will learn something by viewing these information-packed movies). An introduction to the use of 3rd party modo scripts is provided. Tutorials also include use of imageSynth and Adobe Photoshop. In English.

IF U LIKE THIS TUTORIAL PLEASE BUY IT!!!!!!!!!! LUXOLOGY NEEDS SUPPORT!

CMIVFX Modo: Automotive Visualization

Introduction

In this part of the video, you will be introduced to the 3 different projects that you’ll be producing and what assets were used within the training, particularly the car model and the HDRI + Backplates pack. There will be a brief description of how to install scripts, the Gamma 2.2 workflow and how to map useful commands to hot keys in order to speed up your work.

Mesh Considerations
Modo can import several file formats. Choosing the right one, considering the situation, is very important to get you the right results. The three file formats that will be discussed are OBJ, FBX and Collada. Each one operates differently depending on the situations and will be tested with our geometry. Sometimes, moving data through different packages might generate unclean geometry, requiring minor fixing would be necessary for getting good results. Since the imported model is very detailed, having some degree of complexity, proper organization is paramount for the rigging process. You’ll learn how to rig this model using the new Schematic View in order to better pose your model.

Studio 01 Setup, Clay Rendering
A studio environment is very fast to setup in Modo. You’ll learn how to achieve this quickly to correctly visualize your model with a simple light rig. you will also go through creating material presets for later reuse and how to render several types of clay shots to showcase the model geometry through the help of a simple composite in After Effects.

Studio 02 Setup, Photo-realistic Rendering

In this chapter, you’ll learn how to take advantage of the Render Tree to modify the previous environment, maintaining its essence and updating the light rig. You will go through creating new material presets for later reuse and to properly use reflectors to illuminate and enhance the look of your model. (Very similar to a live photography set) Many Render Outputs will be later compositing in After Effects.
Using HDRI and Back-plates
In this chapter you’ll learn how to integrate your model with a photo backplate, using an HDR image for lighting and nice reflections to help achieve this effect. You will need several Render Outputs to enhance in the final After Effects Compositing stage.

Genre: eLearning

In this video we look at developing objects from primitive shapes and how to refine these shapes using techniques for editing subdivision surfaces. We then design a chair by taking a primitive shape and manipulating it to produce a number of different design variations.

Furniture Series: Primitives
Learn how to design furniture in modo.

In this video we look at developing objects from primitive shapes and how to refine these shapes using techniques for editing subdivision surfaces. We then design a chair by taking a primitive shape and manipulating it to produce a number of different design variations. (Total Run Time: 26m. File size 72mb)

Furniture Series: Curves
Learn how to work with curves in modo.

In this video we look at ways of modelling a chair with a curved tubular construction. There are many ways that curves can help you in modo and we look at a number of different ways of working with them so that you'll be able to approach modelling a piece of furniture designed in this way. We then model such a chair utilising many of these techniques and combine them with some standard subdivision surface modelling techniques. (Total Run Time: 40m. File size 117mb)

Furniture Series: Profiles
Use profiles to develop interesting forms.

Working from profile shapes is a very powerful way of developing interesting three dimensional forms. modo provides you with a number of ways of approaching working in this way and in this video we cover using geometry, curves and 2D files imported from Photoshop. We then create a chair in this way by extruding the profile and editing the resulting object with falloffs. (Total Run Time: 20m. File size 44mb)

Furniture Series: Soft Objects
Create soft surfaces in modo.

Creating models that appear soft is always a challenge and in this video we look at two ways of achieving it. First we look at mesh sculpting to create organic forms and then we look at how to use displacement maps to create surfaces that would be impossible to model. To achieve the second requires us to UV our model and also work with tillable textures which we investigate by utilising Photoshop and imageSynth. (Total Run Time: 23m. File size 81mb)

This brand new video album from Luxology Andy Brown is a guide to some of the new modeling, rendering and animation enhancements in the modo 302 update.

The videos cover subdivision surface modelling techniques utilizing new action centers and falloffs, symmetry improvements and sculpting. They also look at creating and animating morphs, creating time-lapse effects using the new Physical Daylight feature, as well as utilizing the Trackview to subtly edit the timing of animations.

The new modo 302 features are not looked at in isolation from the rest of modo. They are incorporated into three very different projects that allow you to understand the use of many other important modelling and animation tools in modo.

In this video tutorial from Andy Brown of Luxology, we look at techniques for creating an architectural model in modo from a given set of dimensions that is suitable for architectural visualization.

Our subject for the modeling exercise is a classic building; part of the Charles Eames house situated in Los Angeles. It’s an incredible and important piece of design and the perfect subject for this tutorial as it allows us to tackle many different aspects of arch viz modeling, from creating a building’s skeleton right on through to interior and exterior detailing. It’s also a straightforward building with a very accessible design, which makes it the perfect subject for methodically gaining insight into using modo for this kind of 3D modeling.

NOTE: This video tutorial was developed for modo 302. modo 501 users will find the tutorial useful, but will have to adapt some instructions to new techniques found in modo 501.

Genre: eLearning

This three-part beginner course introduces digital 3D using modo 501, the latest release of Luxology’s fast-growing modeling, sculpting, texturing, rendering, and animation tool.

Students are expected to have basic computer skills: creating and saving documents, surfing the web, etc. By the end of this course, students should feel comfortable with the modo interface and work flow for 3D modeling for design, illustration, or simple animation. Each part will teach a different part of the modo “pipeline” (i.e. the modo work flow) using real-world modeling exercises.

Gnomon Workshop - Photorealistic Texture Painting

Photorealistic Texture Painting
An Introduction with Justin Holt

In this introduction to photorealistic texture painting, Justin Holt discusses how a trained eye for detail and keen sense of observation are essential attributes to being a successful texture painter in the the feature film industry.
Using BodyPaint and Photoshop, Justin will demonstrate some of his easy to follow techniques and tricks of the trade in order to paint proper color, bump, displacement, specular and opacity maps. But more importantly, Justin will go through essential principles to maintaining a non-destructive workflow while painting textures to ensure a maximum amount of control and flexibility for any revisions and changes that may be requested after the maps are completed in a production environment.
Additionally, Justin will complete the lecture with a quick run through in Modo to show how to quickly and easily generate polished renders that showcase all of the finely tuned texture work.
